Work Package 8: Fitness Costs & Benefits of Resistance
Work Package 8 aims to assess the fitness cost and resistance in mosquitoes infected with field isolates of P. falciparum, in A. gambiae and A. arabiensis colonies representative of natural populations as well as refractory GM mosquitoes generated through other activities of TransMalariaBloc. For this, it will determine the vectorial competence of several mosquito populations, assessing both the genetic and the environmental component of
resistance/susceptibility. The role of parasite/vector coevolution will be specifically addressed. This WP expected to derive crucial data for the dynamics of vectorial competence in mosquito and will help determine the efficacy and feasibility of transmission blocking interventions.
