Research

The work undertaken by the TransMalariaBloc network is centred around three concepts of blocking malaria transmission:

  1. Transmission blocking drugs and remedies
Compounds that when supplied to human hosts, can act to block transmission following uptake during blood feeding by the mosquito
  2. Transmission blocking vaccines
Vaccines for which antigen stimulated antibody production in humans act to block transmission of parasite stages in the mosquito vector
  3. Transmisison blocking via immune mosquitoes
Strategies during which natural and synthetic refractoriness in the mosquito are genetically modified to block transmission

The research towards these three transmission blocking strategies is categorized into eight separate sub-groups, termed Work Packages (WPs).
